Frequently Asked Questions

Why is detoxification such an important part of your program?

It is simple.  Environmental pollutants, chemical residues from food, undigested meals and poor elimination are just a few of the factors we are faced with in this day and age.  The body is smart.  It packages and stores toxins in our adipose (fat) cells.  When we improve and support our body's ability to remove these toxins, we typically see a dramatic fat loss, improved energy, and less water retention.  I recommend all my clients cleanse with each change of season.  This just might be the most important long term health strategy I know of.

Can you really reverse the aging process?

No, not really.  However, recent research at Tufts University listed the key "biomarkers of aging" that can be measured, monitored, and improved through lifestyle changes.  At the Nutrition Treatment Center, all new clients recieve an Actual Age report and the strategies to turn back the hands of time in your physical body.  For more information on these biomarkers, I recommend the book, Biomarkers: The 10 Keys to Prolonging Longevity, by William Evans.

What is nutrigenomics?

This term was first coined in a well respected journal (Nature Review 2003; 4: 315-322).  Nutrigenomics is the understanding that micronutrients and macronutrients can be potent dietary signals that influence the metabolic programming of cells and have an important role in the control of homeostasis.  In other words, what you put in your mouth determines how your genes are expressed.  Poor food choices and consumption of empty calories (alcohol, sugar-rich drinks) promote degenerative conditions (Diabetes, Obesity, Heart Disease, etc...) even if there is no major genetic link.  At the Nutrition Treatment Center, we take nutrigenomics very seriously.  Our comprehensive consultation and specialized medical questionnaires, along with appropriate testing, will reveal what foods, supplements, and exercise protocols are best for YOU!

How do you choose a quality multivitamin?

First and foremost, men and non-menstrauting women should not consume Iron in their multi, unless of course you have been diagnosed with Iron Deficiency Anemia.  Second, choose a product with biologically active nutrients.  For example, look for chelated minerals and B vitamins that are easily assimilated.  Otherwise, you may be putting more stress on your body trying to assimilate these non-active forms.

When is the best time to do cardiovascular training for fat loss?

Let me speak from my experience.  While training for my natural body building show, I specifically did cardiovascular training first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.  Keep in mind, I limited this training to 20-25 minutes per session.  I utilized interval training during these sessions.  Scientific studies indicate that fat is burned much faster-up to 300 percent faster- when you exericse in the morning as opposed to the same exercise in the afternoon.

Why do I crave chocolate and/or peanut butter?

Because they taste really good, only kidding.  This is no laughing matter.  I know there have been nights when I wake up sticking my finger in an almost completely empty peanut butter jar.  Why you ask?  There are a few possibilities.  You may be having a hypoglycemic episode (low blood sugar), and/or you are depleted or low in certain key neurotransmitters (brain chemicals) like Serotonin.  It is well documented that chocolate improves Serotonin, ask any menstruating woman!  Both of these conditions are evaluated and treated with a custom tailored program developed at The Nutrition Treatment Center.  Poor blood sugar control and neurotransmitter insufficiency are two common conditions that undermine any health promoting program.

Are there any natural alternatives to statin drugs for lowering cholesterol?

Yes, absolutely.  The most effective all natural nutrients/phytonutrients consist of Inositol Hexanicotinate, Guggul Gum Extract, Red Yeast Rice, and Policosanol.  Now here's the deal, scientific studies show that the combination of these safe, natural nutrients can lower cholesterol quite dramatically.  Couple this with a custom tailored nutrition and exercise program and the next thing you know you're off another medication (statin drug); a potentially harmful one.  If you or your loved one have been diagnosed with hypercholeterolemia, ask about our product, Bio-lipotrol.  It contains all the nutrients listed above and I have been very satisfied with the results.
